Muralitharan eventually surpassed Akram’s ODI record, but Akram’s 502 wickets remained an extraordinary benchmark for a fast bowler. Only Muralitharan and Warne crossed the 1,000-wicket barrier. Anderson came extremely close, but retired with 991. That means the difference between Muralitharan and the second-placed Warne is 346 wickets. As of 2026, several active or recently active bowlers are building impressive totals, but Muralitharan’s 1,347 remains an enormous target. The more realistic milestone for the next generation may be crossing 800 or 900 international wickets rather than immediately threatening 1,000-plus.

Looking at the numbers, it is tempting to treat the list of international cricket’s greatest wicket-takers as just another statistical ranking. But these figures tell a much bigger story about longevity, consistency and the changing nature of the game.

I would not say Muralitharan’s record is absolutely unbreakable — cricket has a habit of producing players who make the impossible look ordinary. But if someone eventually reaches 1,347 international wickets, I believe we will be looking at one of the greatest statistical achievements in the history of the sport.

Records will eventually fall. Legends, however, are much harder to replace.
